Discipline Overview

The College of Agricultural Science and Engineering of Hohai University was formerly the Department of Water Conservancy and Soil Improvement which was established in 1952. It was renamed as the Department of Agricultural and Water Conservancy in 1958 and renamed as the Department of Agricultural and Water Conservancy Engineering in 1965. In 1995, the College of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering was established as an integration of the Department of Agricultural and Water Conservancy Engineering, the Department of Hydropower Engineering, and the Research Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering. In 1997, it was renamed as the Department of Agricultural and Water Conservancy Engineering (under the College of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering). In 2003, the department was separated from the college, established the Modern Agricultural Engineering Department. The College of Agricultural Engineering was established in 2007, and established the College of Water Conservancy and Hydropower together with the Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering College. In February 2018, according to the national demand and the discipline development orientation of the University, the College of Agricultural Engineering was reestablished depend on the Department of Agricultural and Water Conservancy Engineering, and was renamed as the College of Agricultural Science and Engineering at the end of 2019.

The college has two first-class disciplines, Agricultural Engineering (0828) and Agricultural Resources and Environment (0903). It has three secondary disciplines with the right to confer doctor degree, Agricultural Soil and Water Engineering (082802), Agricultural Biological Environment and Energy Engineering (082803), Agricultural Water and Soil Resources Protection (self-designed). Four secondary disciplines with academic master degree conferring rights, Agricultural Soil and Water Engineering (082802), Agricultural Biological Environment and Energy Engineering (082803), Agricultural Water and Soil Resources Protection (self-designed), Soil Science (090301), as well as Agricultural Engineering professional degree granting right major.

Agricultural Engineering

1.Discipline Overview

Agricultural Engineering (0828) of Hohai University has the right to confer master’s degree, doctoral degree and professional master’s degree (in the field of civil engineering and water conservancy), and has the post doctoral mobile station of Agricultural Engineering. It is a key discipline of Jiangsu Province (selected in 2016). The result of the fourth round of discipline assessment was B (ranked 8th / 37th).

Agricultural Engineering includes Agricultural Soil and Water Engineering (082802), Agricultural Biological Environment and Energy Engineering (082803) and Agricultural Water and Soil Resources Protection (self-designed).

3.Discipline Team

There are 46 full-time teachers in the discipline, including 15 professors (researchers), 18 associate professors (39.1%) and 13 lecturers (28.3%). There are 40 teachers with doctoral degree, accounting for 87.0%, 22 teachers with overseas learning experience, accounting for 38.6%. The teaching staff mainly graduated from Hohai University, Northwest Agricultural and Forestry University, China Agricultural University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing Soil Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other universities or scientific research institutes, with reasonable academic structure. There are 38 teachers under the age of 45, accounting for 82.6% of the total number of full-time teachers. Four of them have won the honorary titles of excellent teachers at provincial (ministerial) level, 1 outstanding scientific and technological innovation team of Jiangsu Province, 7 selected in various talent projects in Jiangsu Province, and 1 national model teacher. At present, there are 1 academician in double employment, 3 in "333 high level talent plan" in Jiangsu Province, and 4 in "Qinglan program" in Jiangsu Province. There are 15 part-time teachers, including Professor Larry Brown of Ohio State University, Professor Yi Yongqing, the winner of ICID international water saving award, etc.


4.Personnel Training

The cultivation of agricultural engineering professionals is profound, which has formed a school running characteristic of "Deepening Foundation, Widening Caliber, Extending Practice and Enhancing Capabilities". The students have a solid foundation, wide range of knowledge and strong practical ability. A large number of outstanding statesmen, academic masters and industry elites have emerged, including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of engineering, 2 National Design masters, and departments or above More than 100 leaders. Agricultural Water Conservancy Engineering was selected into the first batch of first-class undergraduate majors. In the aspect of postgraduate training, 33 innovation projects have been obtained in recent five years, including 16 excellent master's thesis and 4 excellent doctoral thesis. There is no unqualified phenomenon in the random inspection of dissertation.


5.Scientific Research and Social Service

Focusing on the engineering practice in the field of agricultural water conservancy, the major strategic needs of the state and solving the practical problems in the economic, social and industrial fields, and according to the requirements of "entering the mainstream and keeping characteristics" in the research direction of the discipline, we carried out in-depth research on the frontier scientific and engineering problems of the discipline, and undertook a series of vertical and horizontal topics.

In terms of scientific research platform support, it has a comprehensive experimental field of water-saving Park, and two national level platforms, National Key Laboratory and National Engineering Center, can provide support for discipline development.


Agricultural resources and environment

1.Discipline Overview

Agricultural Resources and Environment (0903) is one of the two first-class disciplines in the College of agricultural science and engineering, and is the only agronomic discipline set up in our university at present. The discipline now has the second level discipline of Soil Science (090301) with the right to confer academic master degree.

3.Discipline Team

There are 16 full-time teachers in the discipline, including 3 professors, 7 associate professors and 15 young and middle-aged teachers under 45 years old. The full-time teachers have doctoral degrees and have overseas experience, accounting for 56%. At present, there are one young and middle-aged academic leader in the "Qinglan program" of Jiangsu Province, one of "six peak talents" of Jiangsu Province, and one of "321 talent plan" of Nanjing. Among the existing full-time teachers, 10 have introduced talents in recent five years, among which associate professors account for 40%, and 2 have been specially appointed as young professors.


4.Personnel Training

Soil science of this discipline was approved as a master degree awarding point in 2005. In the past five years, 19 masters have been cultivated. Among them, more than 50% of the graduates continue to study. The graduate units are mainly well-known scientific research and design units in China, such as Nanjing Institute of Water Conservancy, Changjiang Institute of Survey, Planning, Design and Research.


5.Scientific Research and Social Service

Focusing on the national demand in the field of agricultural resources and environment, engineering practice and practical problems in economic, social and industrial fields, the discipline has carried out in-depth research on cutting-edge scientific and engineering issues, with an additional research contract fund of more than 15 million. In the process of discipline research, some representative achievements have been gradually formed, such as farmland water and fertilizer microbial control technology, comprehensive prevention and control technology of nitrogen and phosphorus loss in paddy field, efficient utilization and protection of soil and water resources in coastal saline alkali land.
